Image editing in PHOTO-PAINT X4 has gone through a number of enhancements and improvements:

· A major change is the inclusion of support for Camera RAW files directly from your digital camera. This tool gives you control over the image color, tone and quality. You can view the changes in real time. To learn about this in detail, read Chapter 2 : Camera RAW.

Note: Corel regularly updates camera support for Camera RAW. More information can be found in their . As a case in point, all the images in the Camera RAW chapter were shot using a Canon G9. Support for the G9 is available in Service Pack 1 (SP1).

· The added Histogram feedback allows more accuracy when editing images, allowing you to preview adjustments and compare results. More detail on the Histogram is covered in Chapter 11: The Power of Lenses.

· Improved Tone Curve manipulation, giving the user more control. You can select, add or delete nodes along the curve, allowing you to fine-tune your images. You can learn more about about it in Chapter 3: Improved Tone Curve.

· The Image Straightening tool is for images that were photographed or scanned at an angle. Read Chapter 6: Straighten Image for more information.

· The New Lens Effects filters allow you to convert image colors to black and white, mix color channels for creative effects, map gradient colors, or apply a photographic filter to your image. This, and other aspects of Lenses are covered in Chapter 11: The Power of Lenses.

In this section are links to other new enhancements in PHOTO-PAINT X4. These are: Live Text, Photoshop Compatibility, Font Identification, ConceptShare and support for the Adobe Color Management Module (CMM – covered in Chapter 10: Monitor Calibration: The Key to Obtaining Accurate Color.)

There are over two hours worth of training videos with the X4 suite. CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT each have one installed with the programs and they can be accessed via the Welcome Screen: What’s New tab. By clicking on the  image on the left (or the link below it, you’ll watch a short video (10 minutes) on the some of the new features in PHOTO-PAINT X4.

The other videos are found on the DVD and if you insert it you can watch them by clicking on the link in the autorun screen.

Note: There’s a lot of extra content available but it needs to be installed manually. It doesn’t automatically install by default.

· You can open or save images in the Adobe CS3 formats, open Corel Paint X files or save files in the PDF 1.7 or PDF/A formats

· When viewing, exploring or searching within Windows Explorer, your options are: keyword, author, subject, date and file type.  Additionally, you can edit file properties in the application, Windows Explorer, Windows Desktop Search and Windows Vista Search.

· Within the user interface there have been several changes: redesigned icons, menus and controls offer a new look to the interface. The thumbnail quality has also been improved, as well.

· Extras: On disc are high quality photos on various subjects that are designed to add inspiration to your projects. These can be searched and printed.

· You can now install all Clipart, Photos and Objects to your hard drive as part of the Extras Installer, but the suite must be installed first.

· Open Type, True Type fonts and symbol fonts are included but they must  be added or installed to be used within applications. To learn more about installing fonts, refer to your Windows documentation, the Font Navigator or the Help in any other 3rd party font program. You can find the fonts at: Extras – Content – Fonts folder on the DVD. If you want to access Symbol fonts, go to:  Extras – Content – Fonts – Symbols.

· Other things that you can load are: Pattern fills, Spraylists, Frames, Tile files, Brush textures, Image lists, Objects and Photos. For more information, check the Help file.

· Samples files  are available in a samples sub-folder. i.e.  – Program Files – Corel – CorelDRAW Graphics X4 – Draw – Samples

 · You can access more template files as part of the Extras installer.

· ConceptShare is collaboration tool that allows you to share designs, ideas and receive real-time feedback.

·When saving your files, you can now add keywords or notes about what you’ve done. Windows Vista users can search by keyword, author, subject, date and file type when opening or closing files. Within the application, you’ll receive periodic news about product updates and content.
